Overview

Listening to music is a big part of our lives. People take their iPods with them everywhere they go. However, a new program from Amazon is allowing people to listen to their music from anywhere, without depending on their iPod. Amazon calls it, “music locker.” It makes peoples’ music easily accessible from any computer or android phone that has access to the internet.

Amazon’s new service is a great way to eliminate the need for multiple storage places for music. Music locker allows people who have an account on Amazon to not only store music, but also documents and pictures with “Cloud Drive.” “Cloud Player” will then allow people to store their music, as well as download new music. This music can then be accessed by any computer through the amazon account.

While other companies are trying to create this same sort of service, Amazon’s service differs in that people must upload their music to Music Locker because it does not instantly transfer there. So far the only problem with the service, as with other services doing this, is that music companies often do not want their music to be transferable like this. They would rather people buy the music separately for separate sites. This issue is still a problem the companies are trying to work through.

Music Locker will definitely be a useful tool for many people. It will make listening to music much easier because they won’t have to go through the trouble of storing it on multiple computers. More information can be found here.

On April 4th, 2011, a user WhiteWidows over at XDA Developers forum discovered a leaked version of the work-in-progress Google Cloud app for Andriod's new Honeycomb operating system. Google Cloud will compete with Amazon Music Locker and Apple's Cloud service. It was 'accidentally leaked' to the popular tech news blog, Tech from 10 on April 5th.

It seems like Google Cloud app leak was intentional, considering the fact that it was released just after Amazon Music Locker. With Apple working on their cloud service as well, it seems like the race is on to see who will have a stronghold on the market. Most cloud services look like they will charge by Gigabytes of storage.

It's interesting to consider the way blogs and online media can work essentially as free advertising. Google's leak of their cloud service app has given it considerable publicity and made it known that their new cloud service will be a venerable competitor.
